...and this week in meager offerings...

o/

This past Sunday and Monday, my GF and I took a quick trip out of town. As such that was more on my mind than gaming, though I suppose that there is a little bit of gaming stuff to report.

Saturday evening my Stirland army took on Rob's Ogres yet again. Turn one saw little action aside from his lead belchers gutting my Swordsmen regiment in return for a few crossbow bolts getting stuck in some man eaters. Turn two, the man eaters advanced on the crossbowmen, who apparently were shooting with fear on their minds and wiped the man eaters out! The cannon crew decapitated a lone leadbelcher with a cannon ball, and the main battle lines connected.

In melee a unit of bulls made mincemeat of my halberder's, yet with the general leading them and (as usual) partaking of his 'Bottle of Belligerence' (Crown of Command) they held their ground. In the center the warrior priest had gotten off the 5++ ward in HTH prayer and that, combined with hatred saw the Great Swords and spearmen detachment best, and summarily run down a unit of bulls that also contained his BSB and Butcher (general).

At that point, Rob threw in the towel, and vowed to sell 'em on ebay, as usual...lol.

Then a great weekend was had with the little woman and I've been a bit slow in returning to the gaming fold. I did do a smidgen of painting last night however. I had picked up some French Microarmor VBLs which I intend to use as Mechanized infantry in Battletech. Mechanized infantry is maligned online as the absolute worst unit type in CBT, however as dirt cheap as they are who cares? I see them as cannon fodder infantry who don't need a sometimes expensive APC/IFV. Plus the VBL has kindova cool and futuristic look to it.

The French Army frequently mounts missile launchers on these, so equipping them with SRMs and LRMs doesn't even require a stretch of the imagination!

As for this weekend, I plan on taking my GF's Tau out for a spin to get an idea as to how they work with the new rules. I figure it'll make teaching her how to use them a bit easier. Speaking of her Tau, Screech donated to her cause last weekend. Passing to her the remnants of  his (and prior to that my) old army. This added another squad of Fire Warriors, even more Stealth Suits (she has too many of those to fit into a force org at this point), a few much needed pathfinders, and a bunch of bits which are always handy.

Aaaaaaannnnd...that's all I got for this week.

  1. Don't forget the transfer sheets. You can never have enough Tau transfer sheets. :P

  3. It really sounds like rob needs some of the big and fun units that ogres are known for. Mournfang cavalry would be a great start.

  4. Yeah, @ $36.25 for TWO (WTF?!?) don't expect to see that happening anytime soon, if ever. WHFB is a side project, nothing more and investing large sums of $$$ into our already existing forces is pretty low on the priority lists currently.

    1. Agreed. I chose to play my Orcs because I consider them to be pretty much complete at this point. If they suck because I don't have enough of unit X, all well! LOL

    2. So two chariot sized monsters costs the same as a chimera transport. They each cost more pointswise that that chimera does. You can't even have alot of mournfang really. Transports make 40k expensive just like these guys can make fantasy expensive. I can understand the side project aspect of the fantasy, but I think that the mournfang are pretty decent for the cost and look cool as sin.

  5. And people wonder why I never got into WHFB.

    1. But don't you have mech guard? Your transports cost more than my first fantasy army did. I can understand not getting into the game, but money isn't the reason.

  6. Considering the 40k models for *regular* games now top out @ $115 (and will presumably continue to climb) that's no longer a valid excuse.

    1. I think they may have gone over the top with the wraith knight, but I am happy to see the big kits that I love in fantasy are starting to come to 40k. I will never own one, but they will look amazing on the tabletop.

  7. And people wonder why I'm looking at other game systems.

  8. Check out John's toy soldiers in my blog roll. He has a few posts on bolt action. It seems that in small games, heavy armor takes on a disproportionate role. Something to consider...

  9. Cost is an excuse, Screech has never wanted to play WHFB, Mordheim is as close as he'll ever get.

Also, I think the Riptide & Wraithknight are more of GW following PP after people started buying colossals. I personally DON'T WANT fantasy in 40k. That idea is why we have 'chariots' 40,000 years into the future...seriously? WTF?

    1. Agreed on the chariot rules thing being lame in 40k, but I was just talking about gw starting to make large model kits for 40k like they were doing in fantasy. Which came first, colossals in warmachine or the large kits in fantasy?

Also, Anything else from fantasy just seems kind of out of place in the 40k universe..

  10. No idea, but the outrageous prices of the colassals are on par with the FW super heavies or the plastic baneblade. However PP made them for 'regular' games which is a trend that I think GW followed.

  11. I hope not. So far the riptide is nice, but it isn't a one, am wrecking crew like colossals are and the wraithknight stats I have seen look impressive, but not insanely impressive. Hope the super heavies stay in apoc.

On the brightside, I may get to use my stompa someday
