With 40k purchases on infini-hold following the release of 8th ed, I've gone looking elsewhere on what to waste my hobby $$$ on. 15mm gaming still intrigues to me despite never having ever played anything in that scale. With the demise of my Gruntz army due mainly to the confusing ruleset, I've still been looking about and picked up Team Yankee's little rule book (a close kin to the 40k variety) for the cost of shipping alone ($7) from the warstore.com.
I haven't had time to dig into it yet as the past week was quite busy including a trip to South Carolina for a wedding. Additionally, yesterday's hobby time was largely consumed with boxing up Bob's cheddar Grey Knight army to be deployed to its new home in Arkansas. Indeed bubble wrapping 20-30 super pointy minis takes far longer than one would think...
That said there's no rush to read it I suppose. Forget the lack of any known players locally, rather $900 spent in unexpected vehicular maintenance this week has more or less eliminated any hobby purchases for the foreseeable future.
I was talking about custom space marine color schemes the other day with my buddy Sam. He had come up with a 'new' color scheme for his Kill Team marines, Purple and gold. Like the Hawk Lords I asked? and his shoulders just slumped. lol, no worries dude, finding an original color scheme in this game is nigh impossible. I mean hell, that's also the pre-heresy Emperor's Children colors...but whatever. So I just told him to go with what he liked and don't worry about it.
Not only is this an inconclusive list of Space Marine chapters (wait, where are the Smurfs?!), but its also an inconclusive list of the marines I've fielded over the years (which includes those missing Smurfs, the Storm Wardens...etc.).
Speaking of, I've also been searching for a chapter to use for my newly acquired 40k space marines for Kill Team ($20 for a NIB tac squad, why yes thank you!). However it seems like I'm just looking at the same old, same old, and/or rehashing something I've run before. In looking online for a bit of inspiration, I mis-read the name of the Angels Revenant and me being me I just ran with it, coming up with the following:
The Angels Irrelevant
In keeping with their chapter name, this enigmatic chapter of Adeptus Astartes is all but unknown. An official search into the Imperial Archives of Terra, instigated by the Ordo Hereticus revealed little to nothing. It would seem that the the adepts responsible simply couldn't be bothered to record anything for posterity. No chapter lineage, founding date, home world, fleet and/or unit strength, only the rare and scattered reports of an unknown Astartes chapter engaging in small unit surgical assaults (indeed, they were the same such reports which lead to this investigation in the first place). The knowledge that there is more known of the so-called Legion of the Damned than there is of the Angels Irrelevant alarms Ordo Hereticus to no end…
The only troop types thus far encountered have been Tactical and Scout marines, and never numbering more than a dozen or so individuals at any one time. Leading investigators to assume that their total Chapter strength to be less than one company.
The name 'Angels Irrelevant' is only known due to a single, garbled vox intercept of inter-squad communications, believed to be rallying their battle brothers to prevail upon the enemy.
Livery is black and dark grayish-blue armor with a dull silver Aquilas. Tactical Arrows are displayed on the helmet and presumably display the company color. Scouts wear black armor with dark grayish-blue fatigues, but neither tactical marines nor Scouts show any other insignia aside from their chest plate Aquilas.
Gee, that sounds familiar...
Curiously, a few tactical marines have been seen wearing Deathwatch heraldry. However inquiries into the matter sent to the Ordo Xenos have been ignored by the highest levels of the Ordo.
So will I use that? I'm so indecisive (like you couldn't already tell...), all I can say is: maybe. Then again I have a bunch of cool, custom decals that would work for the Black or Star Dragons so maybe I'll choose one of them instead.
Or, maybe something all together different...who the fuck knows at this point.
Been dealing with a cold this week, nothing bad enough to go to the doctor, as they'll tell me 'Yup, its a cold. Try chicken soup and rest, that'll be $35.' So instead, I just hunkered down at home and I've gotten a fair bit more painting done than is normal for me.
First up, I regunned the Vyper with a 'Brightglance' in an attempt give my Eldar some more anti-tank fire power. Of course its now more expensive and will be higher on the enemy's target priority list which isn't what it's Guardian crew wants to hear...
Sticking with the Eldar, I've also painted a pair of Corsairs. Being Corsairs, I figure I don't really need to paint them entirely consistently, which ought to break the monotony of painting a bunch of identically posed models.
As you can see, I also painted the Exarch for my Saim-Hann Dire Avenger Exarch. I never liked the traditional DA color scheme with the white shoulder guards and helmets, and so switched to black. Much better looking I think.
Veering off of the Eldar, last week I painted the first of the multitude of grots that were given to me for the now greatly enlarged Eleet Grot Mountin Duvishun. Ugh, that will be a project with no end...
Next up, I fixed Inquisitor Coteaz's warped nemesis-stupid-hammer which caused my screaming nerd raging FAILcrap rant a few weeks back. Using a pinned end of a GK Nemesis-WARD!!!-ing stave. Looks fine now. I might use Coteaz & his entourage as an allied contingent this weekend, but to be honest, every time I open that codex it just pisses me off. They get so much stuff for next to no cost that I still have no idea how it got thru the editing/play testing process.
Seriously, a Warrior acolyte with Storm Shield and Power Weapon is 39 points, or I can just take a Crusader which is the same thing except he's also WS4 for 15 points. Because that's fair...or a LR crusader gets fortitude built in and the Aegis for 5 points over anyone else's LR, psybolt ammo is a mere 5 points, and then there's the 2 pages of BS regarding all the bonuses to the nemesis weapons which ought to be torn out of the book entirely just because.
I wounded you, didn't use the force wepon ability, but are you a Daemon/psyker? Yes? well take a LD test and if you fail, get it off the table. Why? Because Matt Ward thought it was balanced. Cost extra? Oh heavens no, that stuff comes for free with the weapons (which also can be master crafted for the usual 5 points extra).
So stupid...were it not for my Imperial Forestry Service Squad, everything Inquisition related would have gone the way of ebay a long time ago. As it is, there's not much of it left. I hate that my fun little inquisitorial allied contingents are now part of a codex that is so utterly broken.
Okay, rant off and now moving on, I didn't get photos, but my Storm Warden's Devastator Sgt. is also coming along nicely. His signum is now glued in place and like the first of the heavy bolter marines in his squad, he's ready for decals, inking, dry brushing and then final touch ups.
Considering all of the new stuff that I got for Christmas, why am I painting on this second hand Devilfish? I don't even have anything else for that army ('yet' as Murl would say). However its cool looking and...
...we now interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to show you my latest toy...
So having been drooling over the CAD concepts, as soon as this went on pre-order I ordered the new Rapid Response Vehicle from Secret Weapon Miniatures. Yesterday, it arrived, behold:
Here it is, straight out of the box, no gates/mold lines trimmed or anything.
Yup, that's really cool looking! It vaguely reminds me of the South African Rooikat. Of all of its weapon options (and as you can see there are several), the hull mounted flamer & high velocity cannon above look the best I think. However that cannon doesn't really have a 40k analog (i.e.: its a realistic size for a modern day cannon, unlike say, a battlecannon). The multi-laser & support cannon (the two in the low-center) are a toss up for the next best looking options. I was thinking of painting this up to go with my Infinity-turned-VOR models, but that would be consigning this to a life on the shelf. So I think I'll opt for the multi-laser option, using this as Inquisitor Coteaz' personal Chimera equivalent.
Its roughly the size of a Chimera, though just where that size comparison photo went to I'm...not quite sure. Here it is with the hull of my new Predator tank. It could work as a Razorback, however it lacks side doors. Besides, having the wheels kind of fits better with the Chimera's 12/10/10 armor. It does have two small exit ramps in back. I wouldn't want to have to crawl out of those under combat conditions though. It also has two rear gun ports per side, though I may limit the number of those firing out to 2 rather than the normal 5 as there is no roof troop compartment hatch.
Of course, this being a resin kit, and a new one at that, it has some issues. Odds are you've already spotted the huge air bubble on the one tire, and the mold apparently slipped on the other side. To render that invisible would require GS skills far beyond what I can manage. However as this is a $45 kit (shipping included) , I popped off an email with attached photos saying as much to see if they would send me replacements. I figured I'd get a response in 24-48 hours, as per the usual for online inqueries.
About 45 minutes later when I came in from taking down my Christmas lights, there was already an email in my mailbox from Mister Justin himself, apologizing for the defects & letting me know that replacements will be shipped out ASAP! For a small online sales gaming company, with whom I've never dealt with before, that's as good as it gets from a customer service point of view!
...and now back to our regularly scheduled Tau nonsense...
...here is the color scheme that I came up with. Chaos black with Hawk Turquoise & codex Grey trim. Looks pretty good so far I think. Neverness gave me the Spearhead vehicle upgrade sprue for Christmas, and while I don't care for the look of the 'saddlebag like' sensors, it does have some interesting looking sensor array-things to go on the front. I had no idea as to what they were till I googled the Tau spearhead upgrade images and found a pic waaaaay down the list that had them. First & only time I've ever seen them used, so liking the uniqueness of that, I'll add those in after finishing up with the chin turret.
The quote below is how sportsmanship was defined on a regional forum by an avid tourney player, quote:
"Sportsmanship is about sucking up and telling your opponent you like their paint job, asking them about the tournament so far, yucking it up over your own bad dice and talking about lunch."
Several comments above said statement was the following army list:
Draigo
1 Venerable Dreadnought with 2 TL autocannons and psybolt ammo 1 Venerable Dreadnought with 2 TL autocannons and psybolt ammo 1 Venerable Dreadnought with 2 TL autocannons and psybolt ammo
1 Paladin with MC NFS 1 Paladin with NFS
1 Stormraven with TL plasmacannon, TL Multi-melta, Searchlight 1 Stormraven with TL plasmacannon, TL Multi-melta, Searchlight 1 Stormraven with TL plasmacannon, TL Multi-melta, Searchlight
1 Dreadnought with 2 TL autocannons and psybolt ammo 1 Dreadnought with 2 TL autocannons and psybolt ammo
Note the list totals out to an odd number as that's part of the tourney's theme and that's about the only part of the above that acknowledges theme.
On top of that, the person who made the statement & list above is himself a tournament organizer who in the past has said that he hoped everyone will come out and 'have a good time' at his tourneys. I guess that concept doesn't apply to other people's tourneys.
With this kind of attitude, it should be no wonder as to why I avoid tourneys like the plague these days.
Well, after the epic clash of the Deathstars from my last post, I then played Murl's Deathguard with a slightly trimmed down GK list with the grand master & god squad left unchanged. Needless to say, Deathguard, which is usually a strong army, crumpled like tinfoil in the face of so much cheese. Indeed Murl's reaction to the realization that after so many shots that he'd only wounded a Paladin rather than killed one was worthy of a Youtube upload (were a video camera available). He had been considering going to a 40k tourney in Knoxville that's only a few weeks off, but said the hell with it if this is the kind of army he could expect to see there.
Way to go GW.
So feeling like a slimeball WAAC player, I'm trading off the god squad to our local cheeseball who's (unsurprisingly) starting a Draigowing army in return for a tau tank of some sort (yeah, yeah, shut up Screech). For whatever reason I've wanted to paint one of those for going on 6 months, yet have had no urge to buy one. So that works. Besides, the Tau rumors are intriguing. I'll keep Matt Fucking Ward (reducing him in rank to just a 'mere paladin') & go back to my original retinue horde with a handful of GK in support idea, that list worked fairly decent & made for a better game i think.
Next I got a few upgrades for my game room this Christmas.
First off are new stools on wheels. Its amazing at how hard these were to find for under $75 a piece. However Lowes came thru in the end, having them @ $30 each. Previously I was using my old & new desk chairs, and while comfy (more for one person than the other), they took up too much space. Especially if you didn't really want to sit down. The stools are low enough to roll under the game table if they're unwanted/in the way, yet still comfortable to sit on for the duration of a game.
Next up was an improvement in lighting.
The ceiling looks black when you aim the camera directly at a light...
The combination of blue walls, and only a ceiling light with a single bulb led to a running joke that we were always 'night fighting' at my house (take a seat Mr. Necron Stormlord, your little party trick is old news here). However yesterday we installed a new ceiling fan that Mom gave me. Now having three bulbs, the lighting in there is dramatically improved. Not to mention the fan will help move the air around when its hot in there during summer (though that could be a detriment when Murl and/or Neverness start communing with Nurgle after eating some Chinese food as happens from time to time...).
Just a quick post. Last night I tried out what is easily the cheesiest list that I've fielded since 2nd. ed. 40k.
Why yes, they were Grey Knights, why do you ask?
Anyways, my sister & brother-in-law gave me the Chaos Temple of Skulls for Christmas, and being largely one piece (there only a half dozen parts aside from the base), I just put it on the table straight out of the box.
The picture above is of the end of the game, and indeed the only one I thought to take. We figured out that over the course of the game, 1776 points of GK & SW fought (and for the most part DIED) on the temple!!! The photo was taken @ game's end with a SW lord, a WG termie & 2 grey hunters left facing the last 2 Paladins of Grand Master Matt Fucking Ward's 'God Squad'. Its has been determined that the temple belongs to Khorne as much blood flowed and many skulls were taken upon it.
We also learned that when 2, OP & broken Deathstars collide in an epic HTH combat, you actually end up with a fair fight!
Just a quick post today, as not much worked on this week (beyond the mini below) is all that photogenic. Black primer has a habit of doing that. First off, Murl gave me some GK Termie 'test models' that he had played around with. I'll use them along with (now) Grand Master Matt Fucking Ward as his accompanying Paladin 'God Squad'. I've had a few requests that I play something 'competitive' or to field a 'deathstar'. Well, careful what you wish for...
I also started assembly on some CSM termies. I received a gift card (also from Murl) to the FLGS and so picked a squad of them up. They're a boxed set that I've avoided due to its stupid cost, but the gift & coupon combination eliminated that problem for me.
Lastly here is a WIP photo of my Mordheim Captain Hans Gruber. He just needs some drydrushing, touch ups & basing. I got the book that he's standing on (as well as another militia box, and some other assorted bits) cheap on ebay. Neverness has been complaining that he wanted to play me in WHFB but I had sold my O&G army before he could do so (the fact that I had the army for years is apparently irrelevant). So Having a theoretical opponent (rumor has it Murl has an all Goblin army somewhere), I was pondering a smallish, say 1k or so Empire army. Currently, I have to my guesstimate, about 600 points, so adding in a wizard, some artillery & another regiment box ought to do it I think. Nothing firm on that yet though, as I haven't seen ANY progress on Neverness' Empire army in quite some time...
Well, despite my thoughts of my henchmen horde as being a 'failing' list, in their battlefield debut they almost tabled a mech/vet. IG army. Indeed the only remaining model IG model was a demolisher (in which all of my units in its range were redeploying away from, as they couldn't hurt it). Coteaz should be considered the MVP I guess having taken down a chimera & Pask's Vanquisher single handedly. However I think the MVP award goes to the death cult assassin who stood his ground after his squad was annihilated. Flush with victory, the IG vets. then charged him and 2 rounds of HTH later, he cut down the fleeing IG survivors. Not bad for a 15 point scrub!
Matt Fucking Ward & the Eversor assassin on the other hand were both gunned down via massed shotgun fire after doing nothing more than looking scary. I dunno, the army has potential I guess, though as my opponent noted, my anti-tank options are rather limited.
Below is my finished Justicar for my Exorcist's Purgation squad. He was both finished in time for the game and the sole survivor of his squad. They did account for a Basilisk & a vet squad, so I guess they gave a decent accounting for themselves.
With the 'cheese' out of the way, I now move onto the big rat. lol, no more explanation is needed on that topic I suppose.
This isn't quite done as I've yet to decide on what to add to his base. 40mm bases are too large to simply flock without some sort of decoration. Otherwise they look more like wasted space than a proper base. I'll have to dig thru the bitz box to see if I have anything 'Empire-ish' looking to add. Aside from that, it was fairly quick & easy to paint with the Ogryn flesh wash once again doing most of the work for me. It certainly is a nice model though. Oh, and I've named him 'Scrum' which strikes me as an appropriate moniker for a rat Ogre.
My Skaven will be taking to the field tonight actually, though this big beastie won't be amongst them. They only have 70 gc or so in their stash, so he's a bit out of their price for the moment.
Well I ended up going with the test rat pack for Morheim the other night. I wanted to see if blowpipes are actually useful, rather than just over-priced, ineffective & very situational weapons. It would seem to me that no, they aren't useful, and they are in fact the waste that i thought they were. True the dice weren't with me, but I doubt that the blow pipes would have made a difference even if they were. In the aftermath of the game (where my dice rolling continued to fail) 4 of the rats in my test pack (including three characters, one of whom was my assassin adept) died.
The test pack was thus disbanded after it's first and only game.
Despite this debacle I've been rather enjoying Mordheim, indeed so much so that I've ordered some minis from the FLGS to form a human mercenary warband. (the captain* @ right is just one of the minis ordered). I made up a preliminary list but will have to finalize it after I open up and see just what all is in the Empire Free Company (or warband in a box) at a later date. I'm thinking of using the Marienburg list, though painted in the colors of Sollund, with a theme of it being a desperate attempt to raise funds to reinstate Sollund as a province (or something like that, I'll figure it out later).
Also, this morning I got a shipping confirmation email for another 5 Quar that I ordered a little ways back. Those Quar will bring my total up to 11 Royalists, which will equal what I'll get when I buy the Crusader starter deal (again @ some later date). However the Quar, BFG, Mordheim, Heavy Gear, etc., all got me to thinking about 40k (or rather my lack thereof). I've played 40k I think twice in the last 6-8 weeks or so. That's it, and here's the kicker, I don't miss playing it.
At all.
I'm just not having fun playing the game. I'm sure the MC/pysker spam nid list that I got handed every week for several months had a hand in that, but no more than the never ending onslaught of the Space Wolves and their apparently now required 'deathstars'. I still recall when that codex came out, it felt like I was fighting the entire chapter as there are so many SW armies here locally (and more have been added since that time!).
In years past I had 'blackballed ' a player or two as their idea of fun was to murder you to the point of you weren't having any fun playing the game (looks @ Warfrog), yet lately it seems that everyone wants to play 40k like that! WTF? Do I really need a sign on the door to my own game room that reads 'No Powergamers'?
So ebay would be the only option right? Well, I've been thinking on that concept for some time as well, and the problem is, is that I'm down to my favorite armies at this point (barring the GK which are a test of sorts). They're the ones that I don't want to sell. Yet, why keep them? Most of 'teh nterwebz' scream 'PLAY WARMAHORDES!' whenever someone says that they're tired of 40k. However i don't like that game.
Nice minis, but I don't like the play style, or the fact that every character is a special character. Additionally, a friend of mine recently played a demo and commented that the game felt like it was designed for you to be a total dick. Yup, that's what I recall from my past WM gaming experiences in WM Mk I. I took a really long & hard look @ Mk II, and nope, still the same game @ its core. Killer combos from 'teh interwebz' is what its all about (even more so than 40k, cause WM is supposed to be for competitive players). Brian @ the Gentleman's Ones called it 'mental masturbation' in his first impressions of the game, and I couldn't have phrased it better myself.
Waits for the WM players to stop screaming their just as unbiased opinions about the games that I like to play...
So, at this point in time I find myself enjoying all of my (not-so) side projects, and instead shelving my massive 40k collection, while still not wanting to sell it. Indeed, its becoming a struggle to get myself to even paint my few GK minis just to see if that idea will work, if only to save all of my otherwise worthless inquisitorial retinues from the auction block. Hell, I feel dirty every time I open the GK codex (and I do so only sparingly). I mean, who (over the age of 13) actually read Draigo's fluff and thought 'wow, that was really good'?
Sure they're marketing this stuff towards kids these days, but kids have short attention spans and shallow pockets from which to spend. Whereas older players like me have long term addictions to feed. I dunno. I'm just not quite sure on just where to go from here with 40k...

o/
In looking throught the new GK codex, I saw that the Eversor assassin's gun was no longer a combi-weapon but rather just an 'uber' bolt pistol. For years I had been using my old 'original' assassin conversion as the aptly named 'Obsolete Assassin'. He was an elite slot Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor with rosarius, bolter-stake crossbow, frag & Krak, and a power weapon, and all for a mere 68pts. He never accomplished too much other than just running around, looking cool, and ganking the occasional psyker. However two quick snips of the 'crossbow' bits on his gun, a little bit of codex gray to cover the bare plastic, and he is now returned to full assassin status as an Eversor! :-D
This evening my 'wound allocation circus' will get its battlefield debut against....something. Hopefully another fluff ball list. Though I'm already have visions of a gun line IG list that will obliterate me without ever even trying to move forward. Nonetheless, I finished painting up my paladin 'Matt Fucking Ward' last night and am rather pleased with him (well, the mini, not the actual guy).
The Chapterhouse Exorcist shoulder pad fit on nicely, and GW's sculptors really did an excellent job of giving it a really dynamic pose (though that was more a luck of the draw sort of thing for me as I ordered this lone mini from ebay). The base looked too plain to just flock (a common issue with the 40mm bases) so I trimmed down a Slaaneshi (I believe) icon to fit. All I need now is the regular Exorcist Squad and then (barring the 'borrowed' Aurora vehicles I'll have an almost entirely painted army.
Well, I've been working on trying to turn all of my inquisitorial 'circus side shows' into a viable army (without having to buy any stupid monkey models). I've also had to raid the Aurora chapter vehicle pool & added in a handful of GK just for good measure. Can I field it? Yes, once I get Coteaz (or 'Cotex' as Murl has dubbed him) and the purgation squad. Will it work? Probably not.
Locally for opposing forces I have the following to choose from: Tryanid psyker/MC spam, completely immobile 'mechanized' IG, Plague marines, at least a half dozen Space Wolf armies, and a random allotment of everything else.
Of course there will be no sympathy for me as I'll be using a codex that often makes me feel I need a shower after perusing its pages. Matt Ward's wish-listing in print doesn't strike me or most of 'teh interwebz' as balanced. 5 points for a master-crafted upgrade? Only 5 for psybolt ammo? Makes sense when a regular SM rifleman is only 5 points cheaper right? Combat servitors can swap their servo arms for a heavy bolter for free, really? isn't that a 15-20 point upgrade in the IG & SM codexes?
...sigh...
Aside from the paladins (and only as I saw they come in units of 1) & purgation squad (I needed a GK devastator unit of some sort) & vehicles. I haven't even read the rules/fluff for the other GK units (or even the majority of the fluff in the whole book).
I don't think I've felt this much distaste for a codex since the current CSM codex was released (only just for entirely different reasons this time around). And yet, last night when I pulled all of my various Inquisitors & retinues out, I couldn't help but smile with affection for the whole mob of them. So, in trying to make heads or tails of what I had, I came up with the following list:
(2) Twin-Linked Autocannons, Extra Armor, Psybolt Ammo
I still have a dozen or more unused retinue models, but they would serve really no other purpose than throwing warm bodies onto the table top (and I think I've already done that enough here.
I got into 40k when I was 19, and my state of personal finances has been all but destroyed ever since.
Basically I'm just your standard issue gaming geek.
